King’s Mtn. Dandies of Woodside,
California was founded in 1975 by Roy & Betty-Anne Stenmark
with the arrival of their foundation bitch, Canadian Ch. Torcroft
Young Bess. The first Dandie litter of seven was whelped in May 1976
and from that litter came the first champion, King’s Mtn. Andrew and
his sister, King’s Mtn. Allspice. All these years later, Bess and
Allspice can still be found many generations back in the King’s Mtn.
pedigrees of today.
Betty-Anne has been
show co-chairman of the Del Valle Dog Club of Livermore since 1977, is
an approved AKC judge of all Sporting breeds, all Hound breeds, Saint
Bernard's, all Terrier breeds, both Corgis and Best in Show. She is a
member of the AKC Trial Board, a 30 year member of the Dandie Dinmont
Terrier Club of America, having served the club in many capacities, an
ex-officio of the San Mateo County Expo Center and the author of six
breed books, including the Dandie Dinmont Terrier.

In 1982 while living in the San
Francisco Bay Area Vern & Anne Wilson bought their first Dandie
from the Stenmark’s and a strong friendship was forged. Their second
Dandie quickly followed and he became Spanish & American Ch. King’s
Mtn. Norton, the Spanish title acquired while the Wilson’s were on a
three year ministry in Spain, and the third Dandie was the bitch, Am.
Ch. King’s Mtn. Stardust. After returning from Spain the Wilson’s
relocated back to Anne’s home town, Charleston, AR, to be nearer
family and aging parents.
In more recent years Vern has become a
full partner in King’s Mtn. and is responsible for whelping and
raising many of the litters born in recent years. Vern ministers to
two Methodist parishes, so other than Sundays he is often found at
home, which makes raising puppies relatively easy for Vern. Jollygaze
Keeping Faith, a Harry daughter, was a gift to Vern & Anne from Emma
Greenway in Australia and “Fiona,” as she is called, has been a
wonderful brood and important producer. Another Harry daughter, the
beautiful King’s Mtn. Godiva, also lives with Vern & Anne.
“Truffles,” as she is called, has both her majors and will come out
again to complete her title. Truffles is a litter-sister to Champions
Stuart Little and Minnie Mouse, but unlike her littermates,
Truffles is not enamored with the show ring.
Vern & Anne are members of the Dandie
Dinmont Terrier Club of America, as well as the Scottish Deerhound
Club of America. A beautiful Deerhound bitch named Ch. Thistleglen
Norah can be found sprawled amidst the Dandies there.
In
1996 Sandra Pretari met her first Dandie, BIS Ch. Montizard
King's Mtn. Kricket and while her first love was the Akita breed, she
quickly became intrigued with the Dandie. She says they are, after
all, big dogs on short legs! Sandra loved the Akitas as much as ever
but the breed has many problems and there were lots of heartbreaks. It
quickly became obvious that the real fun was in the Dandies and in
2007 the last of the Akitas unfortunately passed away. He was the
greatest of them all, a big guy named River, an irreplaceable dog. We
lost both River and his buddy, Kricket, a few months later, River at
almost 12 and Kricket at 13-1/2.
Currently there are four Dandies
running around Sandra's home: the
self-appointed matriarch, Ch. King's Mtn.
Mouse Trap, along with her two daughters, the mustard King's Mtn.
While the Cats Away... and the pepper, King's Mtn. Appley Dappley.
Mouse's granddaughter, sired by her son Ch. King's Mtn. Stuart Little,
the beautiful mustard Ch. King's Mtn. Angelina Ballerina, completes
the foursome.
Sandra is the trainer of the family and youngsters begin their show
training in her kitchen when they're just little puppies. Five minutes
of playing show dog, once or twice a day, along with trips to work at
the shelter, make for well adjusted and very social youngsters.
Sandra's expertise as an accomplished groomer of Dandies along with
her training and presentation skills have been important contributions
to our many successes in the show ring.
Sandra is an AKC approved judge of both
Akitas, Dandies, Dachshunds and Siberian Huskies. She is a board
member and co- show chairman of Skyline Dog Fanciers of San Mateo
County. She is a board member and vendor chairman of the Del Valle Dog
Club. She is a member of both the Akita Club of America and the Dandie
Dinmont Terrier Club of America. Professionally Sandra has worked as
an Animal Services Specialist at Palo Alto Animal Services for more
than 15 years.
